Frédéric Batier was born in Paris in 1972.
He was interested in photography since his teens, taking first steps on the street, in the subway, at horse races, and later focusing on landscapes.
In 1990, taking advice from his father, he went to Gdánsk in Poland and witnessed the end of an era.
In the early nineties, he was an apprentice in two photographic laboratories, Publimod‘ and Pictorial Sercvice (Paris), where he was taught black and white printing. He also spent a month at the Magnum agency, discovering the contact sheets of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Josef Koudelka.
Frédéric moved to Berlin in 1997 and started working as an assistant camera for television and feature films, while pursuing his photographic work.
In 2006 he had an exhibition of his work at the Accademia Raffaello in Urbino, Italy. The show was accompanied by a catalogue prefaced by Yves Bonnefoy.
In the same year, the German band Rammstein published Völkerball, a book of Frédéric’s black and white photographs documenting life on tour. He went on tour again with Rammstein in 2011, shooting digital for the first time.
Since 2012, Frédéric Batier has been working as a still photographer in the film industry. He contributed to all seasons of the series Babylon Berlin, among other projects. He recently worked on the movie Spencer (2021), starring Kristen Stewart.
Today, Frédéric still lives in Berlin with his two children, and he continues his passion in photography and in music.
